Employers are as desperate for employees as ever

Research indicates that despite having failed to get new jobs since the pandemic began, unemployed workers are much more “fluent” to take opportunities or seek alternative work. An expanded questionnaire from LSE’s IESE business school was carried out by the researchers at Canvas Digital, a leading digital marketing agency in New York City with a global presence. It interviewed 600 participants of The Listening List

The Listening List was created by InterDigital, Inc., America’s leading company in providing semiconductor manufacturing equipment for factory automation in its infancy. It helps factories and other businesses across the nation to acquire the critical equipment to close the loop on automated processes.

The Listening List allows factory machinery to perform activities before tools are made. Machines are unable to do everything with handoffs. These machines are routinely discovered to have difficulties with transitioning gears. So they are tested with sensory gear put in place before they start. It monitors the state of bearings, gears, wayboards, and the fingers that touch the electronics. This saves money for the company. It also allows touchpads to be updated with adjustments. With such tests, should the issue be corrected before the next shift begins?

The Listening List surveyed over 600 people. Among participants were:

99 percent were employed full time, and 7 percent were employed part-time (i.e. in college or university).

The respondents are as diversified as possible. 48 percent were women, and 14 percent were men.

Seventy-three percent of participants work in manufacturing and 17 percent of respondents work in other industries.

It also found that workplace productivity and satisfaction were strong. The level of workplace satisfaction was scored an extra 1.5 points on a 5 point scale, showing slightly higher satisfaction.

Job performance was not too high, however. The personal appeal was rated 2.3 points lower than the average of previous researchers. Also, pre-trust factor performance was found to be 19 percent lower.

Limitations of the survey

It is difficult to expect great overall results from a survey of that number of participants. Also, no matter how impressive the sample, there are many factors at play. Employees could also be slightly less engaged. In other words, they might not be as “fluent” as the group is supposed to be.

Some respondents might not be comfortable answering questions about their experience of the pandemic. Researchers could have surveyed a very small subset of people. It is also possible that respondents were cross-trained into working on health and safety or the subject of entrepreneurship.

Worker experience

For the group, 83 percent had a promotion in the previous year.

Predicting more than 100,000 people is not feasible. So to make inferences about the sample, the researchers should try to find a more representative sample.

The researchers should continue to monitor the results of the survey so that they can determine its validity and reliability.

That’s how researchers expect a survey of any size.
